A Brief History of Akköy Producer Market
The fields here were given to the Turks, whose time came for the Turkish-Greek exchange, in order to encourage agricultural activities, on the condition that only crops be grown. The villagers who produce in Akköy today are the grandchildren of ancestors who had owned fields when the time of the exchange.
Each of them grew up listening to the importance of agriculture in the development of the country. Each is devoted to both their land and their crops with love.
Akköy Producer Market was established 15 years ago with the initiatives of the villagers. The producers from Akköy had decided to sell the products they grew in their fields on the roadside part of their fields. They had put their products on the market for the first time by arranging umbrellas and stands. They were all so excited. They were happy that they would share the products they cultivated with great effort directly with the people of Didim and the tourists instead of the wholesale buyers who do not appreciate their labour.
10 years ago, after the decision to relocate some areas from village status to neighbourhood status, Akköy also gained the status of neighbourhood and this place was connected to Didim Municipality. The municipality carried out improvement works and landscaping in the marketplace established by the villagers in order to support organic farming and the farmers. The municipality covered the electricity and water costs of the market.
Producers Feel Forgotten
Producers from Akköy are also grateful to the municipality for what has been done. But in some ways, they feel "forgotten". When I asked why they felt this way, one of the producers, Fehime Eker, said, “The municipality has supported our marketplace. However, there are no other organic farming markets in this region. Shouldn't this be promoted better? Those who come to Didim from other cities mostly enter the district via Akbük road. That's why people don't know that there is a market here," he said.
In fact, this is not a problem only Fehime voiced. I've heard the same complaint from all the manufacturers. Similarly, Havva Kılcı wants more announcements about Akköy Producer Market. “Akköy has an important share in Aydın's olive production. However, we do not believe that this is appreciated enough. Our oils are organic olive oil that has been audited and approved and no other oil has been added to it. However, neither locals nor tourists are informed about this. Can't be bad if the Olive Festival was organized and the producers were allowed to take part in this festival? Both the producer is supported, organic products reach the consumer and it will make a positive contribution to Didim.”
Another problem that the farmers talk about the most is metal sheets, which absorb the heat of the summer more. The marketplace is covered with a roof made of sheet metal. However, the sheet absorbs the heat, making it difficult to preserve the vegetables. In addition, people also have a hard time working in hot weather.
Bahattin Altay, one of the stand owners, said, “Our products that are easily affected by heat such as parsley and tomatoes are in the majority. Growing and collecting these products as a team is not as easy as it seems. We feel very sorry for our labour when we cannot protect the products we place on our stands from the heat. Solutions can be developed, such as raising the roof or using some insulation material."
Didim Municipality Make a Promise
As Voices, we talked to the authorities from Didim Municipality to convey the requests of the producers and to announce the problems of the villagers. The spokesperson of the municipality stated that the roof problem also entered their agenda with the increase of hot weather and said, “We are discussing among ourselves about raising the roof and changing the material used so that our villagers can sell more easily and their products are not damaged. Hopefully, we will solve this problem soon," he said.
Stating that the Olive Festival was stopped due to the pandemic, but the works were started to restart the festival, the spokesperson of the municipality said, “Our olive was introduced to the world thanks to the festivals and we were very pleased with the feedback. Of course, we also want the festival to start," he said.
The spokesperson of the municipality agreed with the producers that the production market was not adequately promoted. Acknowledging that they were incomplete in their promotional efforts, the spokesperson said, "I promise to convey to the authorities the issue of increasing publicity both in our social media accounts and throughout the district."
Invitation to Tourists
Producers from Akköy wanted to address the foreign tourists who came to Didim through our newspaper. Nuray Mantu, one of the producers, said, “We collect the products we grow in our beautiful lands with love and carry them to our stands with joy. We will be very happy if our guests, who have chosen our district for a holiday, will visit our market and show interest in our organic products.”
Similarly, Nurdan Salcan said, “We invite all our tourist guests to examine these healing products. In addition to seasonal vegetables and fruits, all of which are our own production, they can also find products such as olives, olive oil, cheese, jam varieties and honey that we produce."
AKKÖY ORGANİK TARIM PAZARI
Didim’in bereketli topraklarında yetişen organik tarım ürünlerini satın alabileceğiniz Akköy Üreticiler Pazarı’nda, Akköylü üreticiler kendi elleriyle yetiştirdikleri tarım ürünlerini market fiyatlarının altında bir ücretle satıyorlar. Bu hafta üreticilerle bir araya geldik; hem üretim ve satış süreçlerini konuştuk hem de okuyucularımıza iletmek istediklerini öğrendik.
Akköy Üreticiler Pazarı’nın Kısa Bir Tarihi
Buradaki tarlalar, mübadele zamanı gelen Türklere, tarımcılık faaliyetinin teşvik edilmesi amacıyla, yalnızca ürün yetiştirilmesi şartı ile verilmiş. Bugün Akköy’de üretim yapan köylüler, mübadele zamanı gelip tarla sahibi olan dedelerin torunları.
Her biri, tarımın ülkenin kalkınmasındaki önemini dinleyerek büyümüşler. Her biri hem topraklarına hem ürünlerine sevgiyle bağlılar.
Akköy Üretici Pazarı bundan 15 yıl önce köylülerin kendi girişimleri ile kurulmuş. Akköylü üreticiler, tarlalarında yetiştirdikleri ürünleri, tarlalarının yol kenarında kalan kısmında satmaya karar vermişler. Şemsiyeler ve stantlar ayarlayarak ürünlerini ilk kez pazara çıkarmışlar. Hepsi çok heyecanlıymış. Büyük bir emekle yetiştirdikleri ürünleri, ürünlerinin kıymetini bilmeyen toptan alıcılar yerine, doğrudan Didim halkıyla ve turistlerle paylaşacakları için mutlu olmuşlar.
10 yıl önce, köy konumundaki bazı bölgelerin mahalle statüsüne taşınması kararının ardından, Akköy de mahalle statüsü kazanmış ve burası Didim Belediyesi’ne bağlanmış. Belediye, organik tarım yapan üreticiyi desteklemek için, köylülerin kurduğu pazar yerinde iyileştirme çalışmaları ve peyzaj düzenleme yapmış. Pazar yerinin elektrik ve su masraflarını belediye karşılamış.
Üreticiler Unutulmuş Hissediyorlar
Akköylü üreticiler de bu yapılanlar nedeniyle belediyeye müteşekkir. Ancak bazı açılardan kendilerini “unutulmuş” hissediyorlar. Neden böyle hissettiklerini sorduğumda üreticilerden Fehime Eker “Belediye’nin Pazar yerimiz için destekleri oldu. Ancak bu bölgede başka organik tarım pazarı bulunmuyor. Bunun tanıtımının daha iyi yapılması gerekmez miydi? Didim’e başka şehirlerden gelenler, ilçeye daha çok Akbük yolu üzerinden giriş yapıyorlar. Bu nedenle burada bir pazar yeri olduğunu insanlar bilmiyor” dedi.
Bu aslında yalnızca Fehime’nin dile getirdiği bir sorun değil. Üreticilerin hepsinden aynı şikayeti duydum. Benzer şekilde Havva Kılcı da Akköy Üretici Pazarı ile ilgili duyuruların artmasını istiyor. “Aydın’ın zeytin üretiminde Akköy’ün önemli bir payı var. Ancak bunun yeterince takdir edildiğine inanmıyoruz. Yağlarımız, içine başka hiçbir yağın katılmadığı denetlenip onaylanan, organik zeytinyağıdır. Ancak buna dair ne yerli halk ne turistler bilgilendirilmiyor. Zeytin Festivali düzenlenip üreticilerin bu festivalde yer alması sağlansa kötü mü olur? Hem üretici desteklenir, hem tüketiciye organik ürünler ulaşır hem de Didim’e olumlu bir katkısı olur” dedi.
Üreticilerin en çok dillendirdiği sorunlardan bir diğeri de, yazın sıcağını daha çok çeken demir saclar. Pazar yerinin üstü sacdan yapılmış bir çatı ile örtülü. Ancak sac, sıcağı çektiği için sebzelerin korunmasını zorlaştırıyor. Ayrıca satıcılar da sıcaklarda çalışmak da çok zorlanıyor.
Stant sahiplerinden Bahattin Altay “Maydanoz ve domates gibi sıcaktan kolay etkilenen ürünlerimiz çoğunlukta. Bu ürünleri ekip büyütmek ve toplamak, düşünüldüğü kadar kolay işler değil. Stantlarımıza yerleştirdiğimiz ürünleri sıcaklardan koruyamayınca emeğimize çok üzülüyoruz. Çatıyı yükseltmek veya bazı yalıtım malzemesi kullanmak gibi çözümler geliştirilebilir” dedi.
Didim Belediyesi Söz Verdi
Üreticilerin ricalarını iletmek ve köylünün sorunlarını duyurmak üzere Didim Belediyesi’nden yetkilerle görüştük. Belediye sözcüsü, sıcak havaların artması ile çatı probleminin gündemlerine girdiğini belirterek “Hem köylümüzün daha rahat satış yapması hem de ürünlerine zarar gelmemesi için çatının yükseltilmesi ve kullanılan malzemenin değiştirilmesi ile ilgili kendi aramızda görüşüyoruz. İnşallah yakın zamanda çözeceğiz bu sorunu” dedi.
Zeytin Festivali’nin pandemi sebebiyle durdurulmuş olduğunu ancak festivalin yeniden başlaması için çalışmaların başlatıldığını belirten belediye sözcüsü “Zeytinimiz festivaller sayesinde dünyaya tanıtılmıştı ve geri dönüşlerden çok memnunduk. Elbette bizler de festivalin başlamasını çok istiyoruz” dedi.
Belediye sözcüsü üretim pazarının tanıtımının yeterince yapılmadığı konusunda ise üreticilere hak verdi. Tanıtım çalışmalarında eksik kaldıklarını kabul eden sözcü “Hem sosyal medya hesaplarımızda hem de ilçe genelinde tanıtımların artırılması konusunu yetkililere ileteceğime söz veriyorum” dedi.
Didim’deki Turistlere Davet
Akköylü üreticiler, gazetemiz aracılığıyla Didim’e gelmiş yerli ve yabancı turistlere de seslenmek istedi. Üreticilerden Nuray Mantu “Güzel topraklarımızda yetiştirdiğimiz ürünleri sevgiyle topluyoruz, stantlarımıza sevinçle taşıyoruz. Tatil yapmak için ilçemizi seçmiş olan misafirlerimizin, pazarımıza uğrayarak organik ürünlerimize ilgi göstermeleri bizi çok mutlu edecektir” dedi.
Benzer şekilde Nurdan Salcan da “Şifa kaynağı olan bu ürünleri incelemek için hem Didimlileri tüm turist misafirlerimizi buraya davet ediyoruz. Burada hepsi kendi üretimimiz olan mevsim sebzeleri ve meyvelerinin yanı sıra yine kendi ürettiğimiz zeytin, zeytinyağı, peynir, reçel çeşitleri ve bal gibi ürünleri de bulabilirler” dedi.
