According to the press release issued by Didim Municipality after the World Travel Market (WTM) Tourism Fair in London,
Mayor Hatice Totik Gençay, with her “fluent English(!)”, has promoted the district’s tourism potential to the world, held meetings with important tourism professionals, and “brought Didim onto the international stage.”

However, the real picture is not as bright as the bulletin suggests.
In the past — including at the Istanbul EMITT Fair — Didim Tourism Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Tradesmen, hotel representatives, and all sector stakeholders always participated together.

Didim is no longer promoted together, but alone.
Until now, Didim had always been promoted as a unified whole.
But under Hatice Totik Gençay’s administration, this approach has changed.
Neither the Tourism Association, nor the Chamber of Commerce, nor the Chamber of Tradesmen, nor Didim’s tourism workers were present at the London fair — just as they weren’t at EMITT in Istanbul.

Today, we have a mayor who claims that Didim is “opening up to the world,” yet gives the impression of doing so alone.
But Didim’s strength has never been the showcase of a single person.
This town’s success in tourism is the result of those who have devoted themselves to it for years — those who work together, contribute collectively, and act with common sense.

Birmingham Faces Mounting Crisis as Waste Workers Strike Amidst Council Bankruptcy

Birmingham, UK – The city of Birmingham, England’s second-largest metropolis with a population of 1.2 million, is grappling with a growing public health crisis as a strike by approximately 400 municipal waste workers enters its [duration]. The industrial action comes at a particularly challenging time for the city, which recently declared effective bankruptcy.

#A City Built on Industry, Now Facing Waste Woes
Birmingham boasts a rich industrial heritage, being one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution and home to major manufacturers like Jaguar Land Rover and the Cadbury chocolate factory. However, this traditionally working-class city – increasingly diverse with significant communities from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Caribbean, Africa, and Turkey (with approximately 22% identifying as Muslim) – is now facing a mounting pile of uncollected garbage. The strike, led by Unite the Union, stems from disputes over pay and working conditions.

#How Did Birmingham Reach This Point? A Perfect Storm of Financial Challenges
The question on many minds is: how could a city housing such prominent businesses struggle to adequately compensate its waste collection workers? The answer lies in a complex web of financial difficulties that culminated in Birmingham City Council issuing a “Section 114” notice on September 5, 2023 – the formal declaration of effective bankruptcy for a local authority.

Several factors contributed to this situation:
Austerity Measures: Funding for local councils across England began to be cut after 2010.
Equal Pay Claims: The council faced substantial legal challenges from female employees who argued they were not receiving equal pay to their male colleagues. Successful claims resulted in nearly £1 billion in back payments, which the council struggled to meet.
Failed IT System Implementation: An attempt to implement a new accounting and management system ended up costing approximately £100 million due to mismanagement and errors – significantly more than the initial £20 million budget.

Essentially, Birmingham has engaged in significant spending on large projects without generating sufficient revenue streams, leading to an unsustainable budget deficit and ultimately, bankruptcy.

#Strike Details & Public Health Concerns
The current strike began on March 11, 2025, after workers rejected proposed pay cuts and changes to work conditions. Unite the Union argues that workers are earning only slightly above the minimum wage (£23,795 per year), ranging from £24,027 to £25,992. They also highlight a loss of approximately £1,000 in shift allowances and the elimination of safety-critical roles within waste collection teams.

The resulting build-up of refuse is causing considerable concern. Experts warn that increased rodent populations pose a public health risk, including potential fire hazards due to chewing on electrical cables and an elevated risk of disease outbreaks. Residents are advised to securely store their waste whenever possible.

#Council Response & Accusations of Illegality
The council maintains that restructuring services is necessary for financial stability. They deny claims from the union that temporary workers hired to break the strike represent illegal labor practices. Birmingham City Council stated in an official release: "We thank residents for their understanding and patience so far. Health and safety are everyone's responsibility." They also dispute claims of significant pay reductions, stating only 40 employees will be affected by changes resulting in a loss of approximately £6,000 per year (not the claimed £8,000).

#A Unique Atmosphere: Lack of Political Interference?
Interestingly, this strike appears to be unfolding without the typical political grandstanding or heavy-handed intervention often seen in similar situations. The Labour-controlled Birmingham City Council (holding 65 of 101 seats) has maintained a relatively low profile on social media regarding the dispute – and the city itself seems to be coping with the situation, despite the mounting waste. There have been no reports of clashes between striking workers and law enforcement.

#Outlook
The strike is expected to continue into the summer months if a resolution isn’t reached. The council continues to urge the union to return to negotiations, while Unite maintains that a fair pay offer is the key to ending the dispute. As Birmingham navigates this unprecedented crisis, the question remains: who will yield first – the city officials, the striking workers, or time itself?

Note: I've made some assumptions about the length of the strike (indicated by "[duration]") as that wasn’t explicitly stated in your provided text. I also streamlined some repetitive phrasing for clarity and flow. You can adjust this further to fit specific publication requirements. News : UMUT KAŞAN

As the cold spell continues in Didim, street cats seeking warmth from the harsh weather are taking refuge in a dangerous location: the engine compartments of vehicles. This behavior poses severe risks as an unsuspecting driver might start their car, potentially injuring or killing the hidden cat.

To prevent these accidents, it is crucial for vehicle owners to check their engine compartments for any stowaways before starting their cars. Tapping on the hood several times can alert you to any animals that may be inside. This simple precautionary measure could save an animal's life. During the winter months, remember to approach your vehicle with extra caution and adhere to the "Tap the hood, save a life" principle. This easy action can protect vulnerable animals from harm.

Following a directive from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry sent to all 81 provinces in Turkey, the decision to collect street dogs has sparked protests nationwide, including in the town of Didim. Bilal Süren, the president of the Association for the Protection of Nature and Animals (DİHAD), stressed the flaws in this operation through a press statement.

In his statement, Süren criticized the way the Animal Protection Law No. 5199 has been implemented, describing the enforcement as unacceptable. "From the very first day this regulation was enacted, horrific deaths of dogs have been reported in many municipalities. This law imposes a solution that is far from addressing the problem. While rational, sustainable, and scientific methods exist to solve this issue, rounding up animals and confining them to shelters or euthanizing them will never bring a lasting solution. Therefore, the most accurate and effective method is the 'Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release' principle," he said.

"The Circular is Contrary to Law No. 5199"
Süren pointed out that the February 10 circular sent to the 81 provincial governors is even contrary to the existing law, remarking, "Despite this, the public is being swayed against street animals through provocative broadcasts. Those unaware of how to coexist with animals and who resist this inclusion are inciting provocations against us-the advocates for the right to life-and municipalities. This situation is leading to societal polarization and chaos," he expressed.

Call to the Mayor of Didim
Reminding that Didim's Mayor Hatice Gencay has previously shown sensitivity towards street animals, Süren urged, "We expect a conscientious and humane stance from all municipalities against the 'collection and extermination' practice initiated based on this circular. We are particularly looking for this sensitivity and determination from Didim's Mayor Hatice Gencay and Director of Health Affairs Özdal Gündüz."

"Didim Is a Pet-Friendly City"
Highlighting that Didim is recognized as a pet-friendly city, Süren asserted, "No one should compare Didim with other places. Didim is and will remain a pet-friendly city. If any undesired situations occur at our Municipal Street Animal Treatment and Care Center, the people of Didim will show an unprecedented level of ownership and defense. Because when we say 'We Will Defend,' it's not just a slogan. It's a common struggle for everyone defending the right to life."

"At Any Cost, We Will Defend Life"
Süren concluded his statement saying, "At any cost, we will defend life against death. We call on all conscientious residents of Didim to protect and support the animals struggling for life on the streets."

In response to the continuous seismic activities in the Aegean Sea, particularly around the island of Santorini, Turkey is taking new measures. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) in Aydın has implemented an emergency announcement system along the coast of Didim Altınkum. This system is part of a wider effort to deploy mobile siren systems across Izmir, Aydın, and Muğla, with one of the key coastal districts in Aydın, Didim Altınkum, now equipped. The announcement system, set up in an open area by the seaside on Yalı Street, will particularly serve to warn the local population in the event of tsunamis and other emergencies.

The announced systems are currently intended for warning purposes only. Serdar Kırbaş, head of the Disaster Search Rescue Training and Assistance Association (AFAR) Didim branch, highlighted the continuous volcanic activity in the Aegean Sea. He mentioned that experts foresee the possibility of a magnitude 6 earthquake due to the accumulation of seismic energy, which could potentially trigger a tsunami. However, due to the shallow sea and intervening islands, a major impact isn't expected. Nevertheless, these sound broadcasting devices have been installed by AFAD to raise public awareness, issue warnings, and prevent potential casualties. The duration these devices will remain in Didim is uncertain and will be determined by state authorities, according to Kırbaş, who added that the system might remain operational as long as the active seismicity continues.

Commitment to Community Support Continues
AFAR Didim branch member İlknur Macit expressed their voluntary commitment to assisting the local populace, stating, "We try to support the people as much as we know. There is some anxiety among the population, but with AFAD's guidance, there is reassurance against possible risks. There is no definite prediction of a tsunami or earthquake, but it is prudent to be prepared for the possibility. AFAD continues its efforts in this direction, and we stand by them."

First-Time Sightings of Warning Devices by Locals
A resident of the district shared their first encounter with this kind of device in Didim, mentioning that similar installations are planned across many locations in the Aegean region. The officials provide full information on necessary precautions, and anyone feeling anxious or seeking more information can visit this site to learn what actions to take.

Didim Shines as the Region with Cleanest Air in Aydın, While Nazilli Faces High Pollution Levels
Environmental, Urban Planning, and Climate Change Ministry's recent air quality measurements indicate significant differences among the districts of Aydın. The results revealed that Didim stands out with its clean air at the top, whereas Nazilli catches attention with its high air pollution index.

Stark Contrast in Pollution Between Didim and Nazilli
Didim boasts the cleanest air conditions within the Aydın province, maintaining an air quality index of only 38%. This not only signifies Didim as a location with pure air but also highlights it as a model district for environmental health. On the other end, Nazilli, with an air quality index of 72%, registers as the district with the most polluted air in Aydın.

High Pollution Levels in Nazilli Pose Health Risks
The alarming pollution levels in Nazilli might stem from factors such as industrial activities, intense traffic, and local heating methods. Experts express concerns that such pollution levels pose serious threats to the health of the local population and negatively impact the quality of life in the area.

Increased Environmental Awareness Necessary Across Aydın
The variations in environmental and climate issues seen across different districts prove the need for enhanced environmental actions and awareness-especially in places like Nazilli. By developing action plans for districts needing urgent attention, the overall quality of life and environmental health throughout Aydın can be improved. HABER : MAVİ DİDİM GAZETESİ

Aydin, one of the significant cities of Turkey, known as the cradle of democracy, has become a preferred place by foreigners in recent years. However, according to the data of the Aydin Provincial Immigration Administration, there has been a 15 percent decrease in the number of foreigners obtaining residence permits in the last two years.

Aydin is a city that adorns the dreams of many people to move to the Aegean, which the historian Herodotus described as "the most beautiful land under the sky". At the same time, it is a city where foreigners from 118 different countries, including those under temporary protection, and irregular and regular immigrants live.

According to the data as of December 31, 2022, the number of foreigners with residence permits in Aydin was 11,234, and this number dropped to 9,518 by December 26, 2024. This situation indicates a decrease of approximately 15 percent in the number of foreigners obtaining residence permits within a year.

During this period, a total of 1,716 foreign nationals withdrew their residence from Aydin. On the other hand, according to the data of December 26, 2024, a total of 1,056,582 foreign nationals continue their life by obtaining a residence permit throughout Turkey.

Especially the number of citizens from Syria, who are under temporary protection status, reached 8,212 in Aydin as of December 26, 2024. Considering that the population of Aydin is thought to be 1,161,702, the proportion of Syrians in the population became 0.70 percent.

These data show that Aydin is still an attractive place for foreign nationals, but the interest in this area has decreased in recent years. Various factors are thought to be effective in this decrease. However, it is stated that this situation will not reduce the charm of Aydin and foreign nationals will still prefer this beautiful Aegean city.

Event in Support of Street Animals from Animal Lovers in Didim
Approximately 100 people who met in a cafe in Altinkum, came together to support the stray animals in the Didim Municipality Street Animal Shelter. Five foreign volunteers who didn't mind the cold weather entered the sea to collect donations.

Lyn Dulledge (69), a British citizen who has lived in Didim for 20 years, stated that the event was organized to increase the visibility of street animals and meet their needs. Dulledge said, "At first the sea was very cold, but then we get used to it. We will continue to do our best for the animals."

Another animal-loving British citizen who participated in the event, Elizabeth Calılkin, stated that they not only entered the sea, but also used the income obtained from the fair they organized for the benefit of street animals.
